I have several nature-themed (read: twigs) crafts I’ve been meaning to get around to for a long while now.
Long while meaning years.
Now that we’re finally feeling a little autumn-y down here I decided it was the perfect time to get around to some of them.
The first is just a basic twig star. I saw this a few years back in a magazine, not even sure which, but probably either Martha Stewart or Better Homes & Gardens.
Mine didn’t turn out quite as beautiful as I remember from the photo, but what project ever does?
I don’t think anyone can live up to Martha Stewart.
But that’s okay, here’s my twiggy little star anyway.
It’s very simple and only requires the following supplies:
Twigs/sticks
Twine or string of some sort
scissors
(I thought I might need the glue but I didn’t end up using any)
Using the twine, tie the sticks together to form a star the same way you would draw one. Cut fairly long lengths of twine so you can wrap around the sticks several times for stability.
Repeat until all the points are tied together.
See? Can that be any easier?
Why does this photo look like it’s leaning?
(Which reminds me of Joe Jr. on While You Were Sleeping. Which reminds me that I need to watch it again, because it’s been far too long.)

I’m not sure I like it hanging. But I’m also not sure I like it on the shelf.
Actually, what I really think it needs…is glitter. Because everything is better with glitter.
And now, it’s time for a horrific story.
Well…horrific to me, anyway.
Remember these hurricanes?
We were out walking the other evening and I had the brilliant idea to pick up the acorns that had fallen from a neighbors tree onto the sidewalk. The girls and I even went back down there with little bowls to pick them up, and my plan was to fill the hurricanes with the acorns.
So we brought them home and I washed them, then spread them all out on a kitchen towel to dry.
Well….we weren’t home much the next day so I didn’t deal with them until the following morning.
And thats when I discovered them.
Maggots.
{Insert long periods of shrieking here}
On my kitchen counter.
{Insert long periods of gagging interspersed with more shrieking here.}
So needless to say….the acorns are not going to be part of our autumn decor and the rest of the day was spend dousing everything in sight down with Lysol and Mr Clean.
And then repeating.
And again.
And more shrieking.
Seriously, the grossest thing I’ve had to deal with in a long time. Maybe ever.
Moral of the story: Stick to store-bought acorns.
Cause there are some things from nature that you just don’t want in your house.
{shudder}
The end.
P.S. I figured out why it was leaning to one side. Being the brainiac that I am, I tied the ribbon to the side of the star instead of the top.
See? Much better!

when i come in a couple weeks i will have to tell you of the EMS call i ran that involved a live person and maggots….
Loved this post so much tha tI had to read the maggot part to my co-workers we all had a laugh. Love ya!
I love this idea! Yours turned out great-I also love crafting with nature!
so cute!
Great idea, I could do it with my daughter too! She’d love the collecting part too. Though I’ll be washing mine just in case!
Thanks! I make homemade Christmas ornaments for each of us each year and I couldn’t figure out what I was going to make this year at all. Now I know. :)
I love the twig star! My curiosity is peaked over the EMS/maggot comment.
Aww soo pretty!!!
I love the simplicity of the star! I do a natural themed Christmas tree and this would be a gorgeous addition. Thanks for sharing a tutorial, too!
We are hosting a Home for the Holidays link party and I know that our readers would think this was so pretty. We would love for you to join us!

Your star is lovely, and maggots are gross!!! YUCK! I would have flipped my lid for sure! Despite the nasty maggot story, your star is beautiful and I’d love to have you come link up to my very first link party at: http://www.icantstopcrafting.blogspot.com Hope to see you there!

Thanks for linking up! ~Jen @ http://www.icantstopcrafting.blogspot.com
Simple and beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Great craft- and helpful warning about the acorns! I had something similar happen with gourds. And, of course the Christmas tree we cut down, complete with some sort of bugs inside. I agree- some natural things should stay in nature. This star looks easy, and it turned out great!
I’d love for you to add this idea (and any others you like) to my weekly Thrifty Thursdays blog party. Here’s the link:Thrifty Thursdays
I am now officially never going to craft with acorns from the yard ever. THANK YOU for the warning!! Sticks and pinecones only…and I think I’ll maybe create a “holding cell” for those first……
Bek, you make me laugh so hard….
Looks like a great star to me!!
I tried the acorn thing to once and had to switch to store bought nuts!
Thanks again for partying with us at Show & Share!
Featuring YOU tonight over on my blog. You were one of the most viewed links at last week’s {wow me} wednesday party! Congrats! :)

I had the exact same problem with the acorns I collected from my aunt’s yard last month. Strange. I have collected acorns many times before and never run into these little creatures before. I wonder why that is.
And I love your star! I think I am going to make one, too. I have just the spot for it.
I have chills just reading this…the only thing I hate more than maggots are maybe leeches. So gross, sorry you had to go through that. we have had a ton of wind around here and have a bag full of sticks to use thanks for the idea!
