It’s hard to believe 9/11 was five years ago. I suppose it’s just one of those moments that our nation will remember all of their lives as if it happened only yesterday. Like most everyone else I imagine, I remember exactly what I was doing when I found out about the attacks….not hard, because I was in the bathroom getting ready for work just like any other day. Someone much have called mom because she almost never has the radio or tv on in the mornings but she came running in there and told me to turn on my radio. When I got to work close to half the people in my department weren’t there due to the military bases being on red alert…no one in, no one out. Mostly I remember the rumors…all the talk of retaliation and more attacks and our country going to war….it was a dark, depressing day…especially as the death toll climbed higher and higher.
So..in honor of that day…
My country, ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing:
Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From ev’ry mountain side let freedom ring!
My native country, thee, land of the noble free, thy name I love:
I love thy rocks and rills, thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills like that above.
Let music swell the breeze, and ring from all the trees sweet freedom’s song:
Let mortal tongues awake, let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong.
Our fathers’ God, to Thee, author of liberty, to Thee we sing:
Long may our land be bright with freedom’s holy light;
Protect us by Thy might, great God, our King!
