Since we’re headed down to Temple tomorrow to see my sister and her newest baby (and the rest of em), I realized I needed something quick and cute to whip together for the littlest member of the family.
Which means…not a quilt.
Like the one I’ve been making for my second youngest niece, Lucy, for….oh, six months now.
Lame-o.
Besides, I have an entire board on Pinterest dedicated to cute baby things and I’ve had no one to make them for, so I settled on this onesie dress.
And a few other things.
But I’ll get to those another day.
So anyway, this was pretty easy.
What you need:
Onesie
1/3 yard fabric for dress
1/4 yard coordinating fabric for ruffle
1/8 inch elastic
cute baby to attach dress to
First, measure across the front of the onesie, right under the sleeves, and multiply by four. This number is the width of your dress.
Second, measure the length of the onesie, starting under the sleeve again, and subtract two inches for the ruffle. This number is the length of your dress.
Cut fabric according to the measurements above.
For the ruffle, take the first measurement from the dress and multiply by 1.5
Cut it to that length.
The width of the ruffle is 3 inches.
Sew the side seams together on both the dress and the ruffle, right sides together, using a 1/2″ seam allowance.
Next, finish the top edge of the dress, and the bottom edge of the ruffle by turning under 1/4″, then turning under again.
Press and stitch.
Pin ruffle to bottom of the dress, right sides together, and stitch.
Finish the rough edge with a zigzag stitch, then topstitch. (And yeah, I realize my bobbin thread is skipping stitches and causing weird loopy threads but I can’t figure out what’s causing it. I’ve cleaned out the bobbin case, adjusted the tension…?? If anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them!)
Take your first measurement for the dress (width) and multiply it times two to determine how much elastic to use.
Starting in the center of the dress, position the elastic just under the finished edge on the wrong side of the fabric and sew, stretching to fit.
Pin the dress to the onesie and stitch in place.
Once I got to this point I wasn’t very happy with how it looked because all of the stitching showed up right on the front of the dress, so I added some ribbon and a flower.
It was a little tricky with the elastic already in place, and it still looks a little funky to me, but way better than it was before.
