I made these art packets last Christmas for the girls. They were both constantly asking for paper and pencils during church so these were the perfect solution to keep me from digging in my bag for half the service.
They were a little complicated to make, thanks to all the pouches and different fabric panels, so I won’t attempt to re-create the tutorial, but here’s the link to the one I followed if you’re interested in making your own.
The girls love these and they’ve been very well-used for the past six months. So far they’ve held up wonderfully, with the exception of the closure on Mad’s packet. It broke almost immediately, so I must not have sewn it into the packet well enough. Susannah’s hasn’t shown any signs of coming out (shockingly, since she’s such a little brute), though.
After I put the whole thing together I realized that I cut the heart fabric the wrong direction. And honestly, I have no idea what I was thinking when I put that butterfly patch on. Directionally challenged, I guess. (It must have been a late night.) I tried to take it off when I realized what I’d done, but it wasn’t happening. Luckily, Madeline isn’t picky. ;)
Here’s what the inside looks like.
It holds colored pencils, a notepad, and crayons. The original tutorial also used chalkboard fabric, but I couldn’t find any so I skipped that step.
There’s a flap that folds down over the crayons to keep them from falling out. It’s one of my favorite parts about these packets.
These really have been a hit with the girls. They both love to draw (or drawl as Susannah says – she’s such a little hick) and this keeps them quiet and occupied during church or when we’re on long drives.
I also made crayon rolls for all the nieces, and I’ll be sharing the how-to for those in a separate post.
