Okay, seriously, June has been absolute insanity around here.
The parents came for a visit, we’ve been searching for a car, Jeremy’s been working a lot of extra hours, we’ve had lots of church activities, I’ve been re-doing Susannah’s room, planning her 5th birthday party, and next week we leave for Washington (yay!).
I’m almost done with Susannahs room – at least I’m almost done with what I have planned for this month. There will probably be a few projects I’ll work on as I have time before it’s completed but at least it’s liveable now.
I thought I’d share one of the projects this week since my blog has been a total ghost-town for most of the month, and hopefully I’ll be able to share more of her room and party next week.
These photo blocks turned out so cute!
I was inspired by these found on Pinterest, of course (please don’t pin this image from my blog):

How adorable is that?!
Here’s how I replicated them.
- Cut wood to desired sizes. Mine were 3.5″x3.5″. The long ones are 1.5″x5.5″ (thanks, Jerm!). Sand all the edges smooth.
- Stain wood. I used whatever we already had laying around. I added some black paint for a more aged look.
- I wanted a black border for my photos so I painted the front edges before adding the photo.
- Cut the photo to fit the block or just a tiny bit smaller. Make sure no part of the photo is extending over the edge of the wood. Spread a layer of ModPodge on the wood and place photo on top, smoothing out any air bubbles. Spread a layer of ModPodge on top of photo.
- Distress the edges of the photo with ink.
- I also made some birth stat blocks and for added stability added some glue dots. Since they’ll be in Susannah’s room I’m sure they’ll need it. ;)

so on pinterest it showed how to TRANSFER the photo onto the block. you just basically pasted it with Mod Podge? hmmmm….which way do you think is better?
I’ve never tried the other method because you have to use a certain kind of printer ink, but I’m going to try it one of these days.
This was something totally different.
I have done both and I like doing it with Modge Podge. I thought the transfer way was super time consuming. And color laser jet printers and their cartridges can get quite costly. So, for those two reasons…I lean towards this version.

I used distress ink and just ran the pad along the edges. I’m sure there’s a more scientific way to do it, but it worked for me.
Love this Idea…. I would like to make one for a friend. Did you just type out the words that you want to use on the block, what size font?Did you use a special program?
I typed it out in Word and printed on scrapbook paper.
what kind of paper did you use to print the photo on,,I think I might like to make one for my grandson ? they are lovely ,thanks for sharing

What type of wood did you use?
When u added the black paint for an aged look did you add it to the stain?

I used the black Distress Ink – you can find it at any craft store.
I don’t know what the wood was – probably pine. I bought it at Lowes.
I didn’t like the way the stain looked so I added the black paint after I had stained it.

Did u just use photo paper? I tried my first one and after I put the mod lodge on the top it creates bubbles under the paper?
I used a regular photo, printed from Walgreens or Snapfish or somewhere like that.
I’ve read that if you have a “glossy” print, mod podge won’t work. Need to print it out in “matte”

Did you just use the regular matte modge podge? Or gloss? I’m trying to figure out which one would be the best.
I’m pretty certain I used matte, but I think gloss would look awesome, too!
Love the idea. What font was used for the name Paisley?
You can stack these blocks on top of the wooden blocks that most kids have for a kid parent activity that is fun (and most of the time the blocks will be knocked down). Might be fun?!
